A few things we consider when designing a Custom Longboard.
Longboards typically have two major functions a surfer should consider when considering a custom longboard. Nose-riding, and maneuverability.
As usual with a custom shape it initially begins with a consideration of the waves you are surfing, your attributes and ability, and the kind of surfing you want to do (single fin, thruster, two-plus-one, traditional 50-50 rails etc).
When considering a longboard, the wave determines lot of the shape. In South Australia we don’t have pointbreaks that work like waves on the East Coast of Australia for example. This means that surfers can’t “lock in” for an endless noseride without considering major changes the wave goes through. East Coast point breaks like Noosa are mechanical, and the surfer isn’t reliant on having to cut back to the source and re-set a line when the wave goes through a slow section. For South Australian waves like middleton and the mid coast, there are different steep and flat parts of the wave that require turning ability. A board typical to Noosa pointbreaks may have a fin set further back (if it is a single fin) and a wider tail that allows for stability when tracking on a long noseride for example. Pulling the tail in for flatter and more varied waves and setting the fin further forward (for a single fin) will help with looseness and turning ability. Bottom contures like V and a flat section through the middle, into a concave upfront help with keeping the board at a steady pace when walking up and back to the nose, and implementing things like 50-50 rails for ultimate control near the tail. All of these kinds of considerations are just some examples of what we may talk through when designing up a board. Of course it all depends on the kind of surfing you want to do; retro longboard standards can come in to play if desired, and performance thruster longboards are another kettle of fish.
