A few things we will discuss with you when designing a Custom Mid Length.
The term “Midlength” generally describes any board from 7’0” up until 8’0” in length. Depending on what kind of surfing you want to be doing, your skill level, the kinds of waves you want to surf, all depends on variaty of parameters that go into a surfboard.
Typically in a midlength surfboard, generation of speed isn’t a major concern since length typically improves your ability to catch waves and maintain speed on the wave easier. Adjusting rail thickness, depending on your height and weight, determines how well you engage the rail for smoother turning and prevention of bogging.
A longer, bigger board, and wanting to turn it needs a back-end that gives you everything you need to help initiate a turn at speed. Since the board is at least over 7’0” long you can usually be safe to pull the tail right in without worrying about creating too much drag, and even increasing the tail lift will help to get the board out of the water.
these are just some of the examples of factors that can be adjusted depending on the kind of wave you are surfing. For example, flatter breaking places like Middleton would require a flatter rocker, whereas for waves like bigger days on the Mid Coast, or Pondie at Yorkes Peninsula, more lift in the tail and nose would be suitable.
Different fin set-ups allow for a different kind of surfing, for example having a Twin set-up (two larger fins set slightly further back) will allow for a looser feel, whereas a thruster (three fins) option will allow for more control and dynamic surfing.
